Despite the movie’s success, it could be assumed that a sequel isn’t on the cards. Peele didn’t make a sequel to his previous movies as, like this one, they seemed to be stand-alone pieces rather than franchise starters. As such, you might expect an answer of ‘nope’ rather than ‘yup’ when questioning the possibility of a Nope 2! However, Peele has hinted at the possibility of a sequel.
What is Nope about?
On the surface, Nope is about two siblings, Otis (Daniel Kaluuya) and Em (Keke Palmer), who run a horse ranch in California. While running their horse training business, they notice something strange in the sky and this seems to suggest the possibility of extraterrestrial life. But as this is a Jordan Peele movie, you shouldn’t expect a Close Encounters Of The Third Kind clone or a rehash of any movie that has toyed with alien lifeforms visiting our planet. Nope definitely enters sci-fi territory but it’s also a satire on celebrity, exploitation, and a handful of other themes that may become apparent to you when viewing the movie. Will there be a Nope 2?
Nope 2 has not been officially announced. However, Peele has hinted at other movies set in the same universe. Eagle-eyed viewers have spotted the name of actor Michael Busch and his character ‘Nobody’ on the movie’s IMDB page. He wasn’t seen in the movie although he did feature in one of the trailers for Nope where he casually walks ahead while terrified citizens run past him going in the opposite direction. So, who is he? And why didn’t we see him in the finished cut of the movie? We don’t know. It might simply be that he was surplus to requirements and edited out of the final cut. However, as recently quoted at Deadline, Jordan Peele had this to say about the unseen character spotted by internet users and his link to the wider Nope universe. Admittedly, we don’t learn anything about the character of Nobody from Peele’s statement but as he has teased another story that could be the basis for a sequel/prequel/spin-off, the chances of a follow-up to Nope could be quite high.
Who could be in Nope 2?
If a sequel is given the green light, we could see returning cast members Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer again, as well as Steven Yeun and Brandon Perea who also featured prominently in the movie; Yeun as a former child star and Perea as an alien-obsessed IT technician. If the character of Nobody is featured, we should see more of actor Michael Busch too, away from the confines of a movie trailer.
What could Nope 2 be about?
Aliens? Our obsession with spectacle? Surveillance culture? The power of cinema? Black history? These are just a few of the themes that Nope played with so it could be supposed that Nope 2 might also touch on these. Of course, knowing Peele, he will likely make fresh points about film, racism, and other things that impact our culture, so it’s impossible to speculate too heavily at this point. Whatever happens in the sequel – if it is given the green light – expect to walk out of the cinema with more questions than answers!
When could Nope 2 be released?
It’s impossible to say as the movie hasn’t been given official confirmation. If and when a sequel is announced, we will update this page, unless a real-life alien invasion scuppers our internet usage in the meantime! Would you like to see a sequel to Nope?
