The 2020 edition of the Baeksang Arts Awards showcased a night of big surprises, big winners and big celebrations. With a stacked line-up of Korean dramas this year, the quality on the small screen was amazingly usurped by the critical acclaim Parasite has garnered the world over. With returning hosts Shin Dong-yup, Bae Suzy and Park Bo-gum all returning for a third year, the lack of an audience did nothing to quell the occasion as some of the hottest names gathered for the Korean equivalent of the Academy Awards. Going into this, the biggest talking point is likely to be the winner of Best TV Drama. Between Kingdom, Hyena, Crash Landing, Camellia and Stove League it was always going to be difficult picking one that stood out the most. Admittedly we had our money on Crash Landing walking away with the prize but alas, that was not the case as the excellent off-season baseball drama Stove League took the glory. Kim Hee-ae’s wonderful performance in The World Of The Married was rewarded with the illustrious prize of Best TV Actress, something that’s even more impressive given she was up against powerhouse performances from IU and Kim Hye-Soo. Jeong Yeok-Wook won the Technical Award for his excellent work in The Great Escape 3 while the ever-lovable Pengsoo bagged Giant PengTV an award for Best Educational Show – an equally impressive feat alongside the 2 million+ YouTube subscribers. Overall then, there were some big surprises and Camellia winning the Grand Prize in TV is almost certainly going to divide fans who will end up fiercely debating whether this was justified or not. Given the sheer wealth of talent in the Korean scene right now, whether it be film, arts and entertainment or International TV dramas, the Baeksang Arts Awards delivered another great year of talent.
